Protecting cabinets from heat and humidity

It has been a crazy summer with scorching record temperatures accompanied by oppressive high humidity levels.  It is a good time to remind our readers how these two forces can raise havoc on wood cabinetry.
As a product of nature, solid hardwoods continue to react to their surroundings long after manufacture. When the heat and humidity rise outside the moisture levels inside the home can escalate very quickly and can cause irreparable damage to wood cabinetry. Wood acts much like a sponge, as it absorbs water, it swells in size.
Failing to control wood’s moisture content is a leading cause of damage to cabinetry.  Excessive changes in moisture content create tremendous stresses on your cabinetry as the wood grows or shrinks.  The majority of cracks, splits, open joints, and other damage to cabinetry results from failing to maintain a steady range of temperature and humidity.
