Follow along with a real kitchen remodel!

Today's blog finds us at a point in our project where the new cabinets have been installed and the cement laid for the new tile flooring that will added later this week.

The load bearing wall has been removed and the whole kitchen opened up to the rest of the house. The White painted cabinets with glaze are being used on the perimeter of the kitchen and darker stained cabinets that compliment it on the island.

The floor is being prepared for tile with a "mud" set. “Mud-Set” or “Mud-Bed” are terms used for a 3/4" Portland cement and washed mason sand sub-surface for ceramic, porcelain & natural stone floor tile. “Mud-Setting” the floor to accept tile is the ideal substrate: to provide a sound, flat and level floor, to provide a water-resistant base, and to add structural stability to new and old floors.

After a layer of tar paper and then a layer of wire mesh is laid down, the "mud" is pulled and packed to create a solid surface to lay the tile on.

Unlike new construction, where homeowners are not typically living on site, a remodeling project must take into consideration that people are living daily in the same space that is being worked on. While we are on the job, we pick up and sweep daily so the job sight is kept nice and clean! Also note the plastic cover that is keeping the dust and construction debris from blowing around into the rest of the house.

Kitchen remodeling is not only an aesthetically pleasing renovation for your home, but also a great investment with tremendous resale value. Kitchens are considered the center of the home. Besides its obvious use of cooking and eating, in today’s modern home, the kitchen is often times the central gathering area. Kitchens can also be the main showpiece of a home.
