We recently discussed the importance of a good layout and good design when planning for a new kitchen remodel. To create a functional family kitchen, here are some more ZONE ideas.
- A simple and efficient way to introduce Zone in the kitchen is to add an island. Most people want an island in their kitchen. It’s a great solution and really opens up the kitchen. The peninsula design isn’t quite as family friendly and creates congestion in the kitchen – only one way in and one way out. A well designed island can provide an extra workstation for additional workers and can also encourage kids and guests to congregate on one side. It allows for the cook to be segregated and have the cooking activities all on one side.
- When designing your new island, be sure to allow for ample walk ways and room around the island. The minim mum size for a comfortable island is about four feet long and two feet deep.
- Next you need to design the island’s function and storage. Maybe on the outer side of the island, not the cooking side, you might place drawers or cabinets for a “kid zone”, where kids of all ages can easily grab snacks or art/school supplies. Consider a beverage zone, beverage fridge, maybe the microwave makes sense to go here, how about a second sink? If the island is too small to house these things, it can be used for dining, food prep, homework or a buffet for entertaining.
- If the island is big enough, add seating. Consider placing seating along two sides of a corner if possible so everyone isn’t lined up like soldiers! It allows for eye contact.
Allow for a comfortable space to sit, chat, and eat.
