Kitchen’s Reflect Homeowner Preferences – Winning Projects

The theme to the NKBA 2011 Design Competition winning projects is: they all have distinct visual elements and color, unique design details, personalized products/materials and an architecturally artistic approach to proportion. Among the forward thinking trends are:
Color: A winning design had a backsplash of back-painted glass in a carrot orange, representing a color that’s smooth and fresh and refined enough to pair with the contemporary exotic wood cabinetry. A tangerine, mango and carrot color family was incorporated into the color palette.

Texture:  A winning design had an oversized glass mosaic tiled rug inset into the limestone floor, creating the effect of a textured and patterned area rug. A quilted effect was created using custom-made glass tiles, adding shimmering surface in the shower area.
Glass:  Lots of glass glimmering throughout kitchens and baths this year. Glass acts as a pop of color and light against the warmth of wood and also helps to provide cohesion in the kitchen.

Espresso and Chocolate in Cabinetry: These hues can be incorporated into kitchens whether they are contemporary or traditional and paired with brighter accents.

Walk-In Pantries: Open wall space and less wall cabinetry is the trend and is sparking the need for smart storage solutions. Walk-in pantries are being designed as a working pantry – sinks, dish storage and food storage can be incorporated into pantries integrated into the space.
Detailed Ceilings: Rough-hewn barn beam ceilings, rustic touches, traditional architectural features paired with sleek contemporary finishes and materials are creating comfort-worn spaces.
