How to save thousands of dollars when you remodel your home

7 secrets to saving yourself from a ton of headaches when you decide to remodel in your home

Secret #1- Avoid common misconceptions such as: going with the lowest price saves you money; doing it yourself saves you money. While its important not to pay too much, its even more important to not pay too little!

Secret #2- Beware of Common Scams: High pressure sales; Today only pricing; Door-to-door contractors (not all door-to-door are scams-check references thoroughly).

Secret #3- Ask Contractor Question: Are you licensed? Do you carry liability insurance? Are you a member in a local professional trade association, either the Builders Association or Remodeler's Council? Are you willing to pull all the required permits? Do you offer a written warranty on your work? Will you provide written references? Have you been operating successfully for at least 10 years?? Will you provide east to understand contracts and clearly written material specifications and payments schedules?

Secret #4- Listening to the wrong people: Taking advice from people unqualified to give it. Check with a qualified remodeling expert, check references, visit examples of their work.

Secret #5- How to tell if your project will run smoothly: Do you have good communication with the contractor? Does he/she understand your needs and concerns? Are you on the same page? Does he/she listen to you? Are calls returned promptly?  Is he/she trustworthy? Will the contractor provide you with a written schedule of how the project will progress? Does your contractor have a neat appearance, clean vehicle-will they keep your home clean?

Secret #6-Does your contractor ask for a large down payment up front?: This could be assign that they are not in good financial shape- you could be in for a rocky experience. Tip: a fair amount for a down payment is 10-20%. As the job progresses, you should expect to pay out additional funds to match the prescribed, completed stages.

Secret #7- Plan your project: this is really the greatest secret of all. You need to thoroughly plan your project with a qualified, professional remodeling expert.
