National Remodeling Month – May 2011

May is designated as National Remodeling Month because more people begin remodeling projects in May than any other month. The Southeastern Michigan Building Industry Association [BIA] in conjunction with the Remodeler’s Council will begin promoting and celebrating National Remodeling Month. We’ll focus today on education since many people will starting projects and selecting a contractor.

Is this a good time to remodel?

We find that many people are finding it difficult to sell their homes in this economy so they are making the decision to stay put in their home, and starting those projects, kitchen and bath renovations, that they have been putting off. Sometimes it makes sense to invest in your homes. Typically kitchens are the highest return, somewhere around a 79% return on investment.  And, kitchens sell homes. Bathrooms are the next thing that people will be looking to see updated when buying a home. Also, it just makes sense to maintain and upgrade your home.

How to a find a good remodeler?

Asking people you trust that have remodeled. Another good place to start is the Southeastern Michigan Building Industry Association [BIA] where you’ll find a list of remodelers that also have professional designations like Certified Graduate Remodeler [CGR] and Aging in Place Specialist [CAPS].
